Though this particular placement was a rather challenging adjustment for me, I walked out of the classroom today feeling very sad! I just love my kiddos! They were such a bright group of kids, and I know that I have witnessed firsthand the future of our cities, states, and country. These kids are really going places and I am so glad to say that I had just a tiny moment to maybe make a difference in their lives!

I am truly grateful for my time at Lotts, because it has shed light on so many aspects of teaching that I had yet to experience. I know I have made the small town girl/rural upbringing reference several times, but I didn’t realize how different suburban life really is. It has been an eye opener for me, to see how many advantages these students have and how fortunate they are to be equipped with technology and tools that are going to only provide them with the best education they could possibly receive.

My biggest regret is that I didn’t have enough time to really get to sink my teeth into my placement. I felt that I was just getting comfortable, and now it’s over. However, it has been another amazing experience, and once again, I walk away knowing that teaching is the right choice for me!
I am also surprised at the life the students live. Where I come from you was lucky to have 3 computers inn the class. These kids have so much offered to them, and not to mention the after school activities. I felt so out of place, but Mrs. Alexander made me feel right at home in her class.
Samantha,

I am so glad you enjoyed your placement. I feel like you, I was raised in a rural areas as well and was amazed by the different way of life these kids live.
That is different Tiffany, they classes collecting money for Christmas. I'm use to our Anderson County schools offering assistance to student families at Christmas instead. The socioeconomics were definitely reversed at Lotts, my class had 4 free/reduced while at previous placements, it would have been all but two.

In reading, our 5th grade class has been learning how to spot the differences in fact and opinion. One area that the students seem to struggle with, comes from the perspective aspect of the statements. They often seem to want to interject their own opinions, when choosing between the two. Additionally, there was one student was convinced that the statement “Roscuro thinks the light is beautiful” was a fact rather than an opinion, because he could turn to page 142 and prove that is the emotions conveyed by Roscuro (rather than understanding that the light is beautiful is Roscuro’s opinion). We are continuing to focus on this subject, so my lesson today built on what they already knew about facts and opinions. We used a historical account in our reading books, and focused on those things that we could PROVE, and those things that may have just been a belief of someone.

In teaching today’s lesson, I found an area of weakness that I need to build on and develop. I am a little concerned about my classroom management techniques. I have a hard time keeping the “chattiness” down, and managing to get them to pay me the same respects that they pay Mrs. Dunn. This is something I am definitely going to have to work on before I get my own classroom!

Overall, I am still continuing to enjoy 5th grade! They’re a fun crew and I have learned a lot from my short time with them!
I am amazed at how well the fourth graders read. I have seen them with Harry Potter. That makes me smile. It is so nice to get lost in a book, and these kids love it. Classroom management is an area that I have been working on. I thought it would be hard for me to be stern, but all you have to do is clap....trust me it works. I felt silly doing it with you all in our class, but it really does work with the students. I also use something my teacher uses "If you can hear me raise your hand." It works also. Just thought I would share those techniques. It takes a little getting to know what works with each class, but I'm sure you'll do fine when it really counts.
I am so glad your lesson was good! It is fun to get up there and get to teach a lesson whole group. I can't say mine are always good, but I sure do have a great time with them. When I was at Norris for my practicum my 5th graders were also doing fact and opinions. I really enjoyed this topic. I actually taught my formal observation on this. If you want to check it out, it is on my wiki under planning. It is the first lesson. It is not great or anything but my students enjoyed the activity. It is hard when we find areas of weaknesses in ourselves, but it is also freeing. Because when we realize they are there is when we are able to work on them and make ourselves better. Ill be the first one to tell you I am full of all kinds of weaknesses to be working on. But we can do it for sure. I believe in you and I know you will get a handle on it and are going to be an absolutely wonderful teacher. I hope you enjoy your weekend and last day at A.L. However, this placement has been a bit of a challenge for me. I have always been a small town/rural kind of girl. I graduated from a K-12 school with 38 students in my senior class and 600 students school wide. No stop lights, no McDonald’s. So for me, the roughly 1,200 students at A.L. Lotts, has literally made my jaw drop. But even more amazing than the size, is the fact (and not just my opinion-which is what we have been working on in Language Arts) that the transitions between classes and locations are virtually flawless. My 5th graders are all over the place! But if you ask them, they know exactly where they are going and what they are supposed to do.

I am also getting some great experience working with several students who aren’t typical (though I hate to even use that word). Throughout the day I work with students who have Asperger’s, students with strong ADD tendencies, students with developmental delays, ELL students, and students who are very gifted. It has been really good for me to work with and learn to adapt my teaching strategies to these various different levels and abilities.

This placement has been totally different from my previous two placements (both in Anderson County). Some things I find that I like better and some things are a little different than what I am use to. Regardless, I am learning and growing and having a great time doing so.
It is very different than our previous placements as far as students!
Though it may have been a little crazy, today was a great experience that I feel very fortunate to have been a part of. There are so many things that are involved in a field trip that I just wouldn’t have thought of, until I had the chance to view it from the teacher’s perspective. For example, in the parent letter that was sent home, students were informed that there would be a “no gift shop shopping” policy in place. This would prevent students from being irresponsible with their money, as well as alleviate any chance of children feeling awkward because they didn’t have any (or as much) money to spend. Also, thorough planning was put into the educational aspect of the trip by creating a “scavenger hunt” that the students were instructed to participate in as they ventured through the museum.

As for my actual first day in the classroom, I really believe that I am going to benefit and learn from Mrs. Dunn. Her students are respectful and well mannered. They understand the rules and know they are expected to follow them. Mrs. Dunn isn’t new to education, and has a wealth of knowledge that I look forward to experiencing. I am also looking forward to the opportunity to get to teach multiple subject areas, as well as multiple intelligences and diverse, multi-cultured students.
I've noticed that overall, the students as a whole are very well behaved and respectful too.
