Creech, Sharon. Heartbeat. New York: HarperCollins, 2004. Print.
Heartbeat by Sharon Creech is a verse novel about an adolescent girl named Annie, and the daily events going on in her life. Annie loves to run and often does so with her best friend Max. However, growing up is hard on both boys and girls, and Annie is left to deal with Max’s ever so frequent mood swings. But that’s not all… Annie is also learning to cope with her ageing grandfather who has increasing health problems, and her mother who has just let Annie know that she has a baby on the way. This story is an excellent read that perfectly models the everyday rhythms of life. Sometimes it’s fast and sometimes it’s slow, and for those of us like Annie… Sometimes it’s about simply setting your own pace.
