Something to Blog About: A Novel by Shana Norris is a great read about a typical teenage girl who is faced with all the typical teenage drama that most girls go through in high school. Libby Fawcett feels as if her world is spinning out of control. Her mother has started dating her worst enemy’s father, her crush, Seth, doesn’t even know she exists, and she’s clumsy enough to set her own hair on fire in her chemistry lab. Desperately needing a place to vent, Libby starts an online blog as an outlet for her emotions. However, when an uncontrollable twist of fate allows Libby’s online journal to become public knowledge, Libby truly feels as if her life is over. This book is extremely engaging and can keep the reader involved because it is so lifelike and relatable.
Mock Facebook Character Page:
Facebook is a social networking site that most teens (and even adults) are very familiar with. By using this technology, students can essentially take on the role of their favorite character from any novel and create a mock facebook page. This post reading activity lets other students look at some of the characteristics of a specific character, while also allowing the student to review the behaviors/attitudes of that same character. To view an example of a mock facebook for Libby Fawcett click below.
Phrasr is a website that allows students to type in a specific phrase and match photos or graphics to each specified word. This is a technology resource that can be used in pre, during, and post reading activities. This activity is also great for ESL students as well as visual learners; because it allows the student to visually link an image to certain words.
